Apple Pie

We went apple picking the weekend before so we decided to make an apple pie and it was so delicious!

Yield: 1 pie (serves 6-8)
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time:
3 hours

Ingredients

1 pie crust + pie crust dough
2 lbs apples (cored and sliced)
1 tsp cinnamon
6 tsp unsalted butter
3 tbsp flour
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg + 1 tbsp water for egg wash

Directions:

- Preheat oven 425F
- Melt butter in medium saucepan on medium heat
- Whisk in flour and simmer for 1 minute, whisking constantly
- Whisk in water and sugar and bring to a boil
- Reduce heat, and simmer for 3 minutes, whisking frequently then remove from heat
- Peel, core and slice apples
- Sprinkle cinnamon and then pour sauce over apples - mix well
- Pour into pie crust
- Cut pie dough into strips
- Place 3 strips in the same direction with longer slice in the middle of the pie
- On both sides of the middle, lift up the two parallel strips to place the perpendicular strips
- Place the strips back down and lift the other parallel strips and place the perpendicular strips
- Can use excess dough on the edges and then pinch the outer edge to cause a flower shape
- Apply egg wash and place on middle rack in the oven
- Bake for 15 minutes and then without opening the oven door reduce heat to 350F
- Bake for another 45 minutes and remove to cool for 1 hour before enjoying

Tips & Thoughts
- We bought a graham cracker pie base as we don't have pie pan
- We bought pie crust dough to do the lattice top
- We used tart apples we picked from the orchard
