I don't like spicy foods but you never know when you have to use them in your cooking or you accidentally ate something too spicy to handle. Here are some tips on how to handle chillis.
- When handling chillis, wear protective gloves or be careful afterward to wash hands thoroughly with soapy water. Residual irritants on the fingers can burn whatever part of the body you touch next.
- When cleaning cutting boards, knives, and containers, begin with cold water and scrape and rinse chilli residues gently down the drain with minimal splashing. This will minimize the creation of irritating vapors.
- To relieve a mouth burning from hot chillis, sip a noncarbonated cool liquid. The irritants causing the burn can't be washed off, but lowering the mouth temperature reduces the pain. The prickling of strong carbonation increases it. To relieve chilli-burned skin, cool it with refrigerator-temperature objects or tap water. Don't use ice, which can cause cold-induced pain and injury.
